"Friends" by Michael W. Smith
Friends are friends forever if the Lord is the Lord of them
And friends will not say never because the welcome will not end
Though it is hard to let you go, in the Father's hands we know
That a lifetime is not too long to live as friends
Jonathan and David - Soul Friends
Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
Saul took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father's house anymore. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armour, even to his sword and his bow and his belt. 1 Samuel 18:1-4 NKJV.
Jonathan means "Yahweh gave." He was the eldest son of King Saul. The next in line to the throne of Israel. A valiant soldier. Jonathan had earlier attacked a garrison of Philistines (1 Samuel 13:2-3; 14:1-16) with the same faith and bravery with which David had just slain Goliath, the Philistine giant (1 Samuel 17:23-51), so that there was between them a very near resemblance. A similar audacious fervour for Yahweh, and a passionate honour for Israel!
Instead of regarding David as his rival, "the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul." And Jonathan sealed this bond and love for David through a covenant and presented David with generous gifts. Henceforth, David would be seen in Jonathan's clothes, armoury and weapon. Almost like Jonathan's second self. A second self. Someone whom Jonathan relinquished his kingdom to.
A rare relationship. A true friendship. An encounter of kindred spirits. When two souls are knitted together and sealed by a covenant. When out of all God's creation, one's lifetime is intended by the Creator to parallel another in the same period. When souls collide. An exchange of hearts and dreams.
I have riches that money cannot buy. Each a blessing from God and has blossomed into jewels in my life, for keeping with me all these years. Through thick and thin, through tears and fears, through hurts and disappointments, through silence and misunderstandings, through forgiveness and acceptance.
I have riches that money cannot buy. Jewels in my life whom I call by names. You know who you are for your heart tells you so. Thank you for the times.
In His love and mine,
Sm a.k.a. Taz a.k.a. Coz
