The following is a response to a post from my friend detailing his thoughts on the DaVinci Code.

Hi bro,

Thanks for the detailed thoughts and research. Very well written & enlightening.

If something isn't true, nobody would bother to malign it since there is nothing to gain from doing so. But if something is, well, that's another story. Just think, till now, people still claim to have seen Elvis alive somewhere. Elvis has been dead for decades, and "Elvis sightings" simply give these people their instant 5 mins of fame, just as DaVinci Code has given Dan Brown his ( though his 5 mins seem long and he's made some big bucks in the process, it's a blip in eternity).

Coming back, one of the earliest conspiracies happened after Jesus was crucified. The soldiers who guarded the tomb where Jesus was laid were paid to tell a different story. Even from those early days, such a rumour did not put out the fire in the Christian faith. If all this story about God redeeming man through Jesus is a great big lie, it would have petered out long time ago, but for the Christian faith to endure and in fact grow phenomenally for more than 2000 years, it must have been a conspiracy of the highest order transcending race, nation, language, culture, and time, truly befitting the tagline of the greatest lie ever told.

Or it could have been true.

If anyone has any common sense left, let him think. For something to exist for 2000 years with eye-witness and written accounts, and then to be dismissed as a great big lie by one "enlightened" soul - wow, that one enlightened soul must have been God himself coming to save people from being duped further into taking up a baseless faith. And the world really has Dan Brown & his ancestors to thank for saving her clueless citizens from the greatest lie. Hooray!

But wait, it begs the question: If this Jesus story is one big "wayang", what is our enlightened soul & "learned professor" offering in return?

Nothing.

Just follow him in his life-long study of religions, and maybe watch him overturn Islam (oh, I forgot Salman Rushdie has beaten him to that), Buddhism and other major religions some years down the road, and make a few more fast bucks along the way. When he has finally exhausted all religions, making fools out of everyone, he can always write Harry Potter books. Pathetic.

DaVinci Code - it's just a thesis that purports to expose something as false and offers nothing in return. I predict the enlightened one will next discover some scrolls containing more codes that will reveal the path to salvation & our saviour go on Larry King's or Oprah's to tell the world about it. Oh, give us a break. Many cults and heresies have done that over the centuries. Good try, here's a banana. Next.
