Geek Thanks

Geek thanks with a grateful heart
Geek thanks to the Holy One
Geek thanks because He's given Jesus Christ His Son

I know that's not how the original song goes, but here's one geek who's truly thankful and grateful to God for several miracles over the last week. So many things have happened that I haven't found time to write anything for a while. So, what happened?

Miracle #1

Well, last week, I went on a whirlwind 2-day trip to my Malaysian offices. While we were there, a rather critical system in KL could not boot-up on the day I was scheduled to return to Singapore. My colleague who travelled with me changed his schedule and dropped by to check on that PC on the night that I took a coach home. At about 9pm, I received an SMS from him saying that the problem was resolved. It was a hardware failure and we happened to have the spare with us on this trip.

Miracle #2

I reached home past midnight when I travelled back from KL. Next morning at 9am, I was back at work in the office. There was some major problems with a recently launched enterprise system which started on day one of my trip to Malaysia, and there I was, working to figure out what might have gone wrong. Within the next couple of hours, I found out that the problem was specifically confined to a record that was corrupted. The record was corrected and the problem resolved. I was visibly tired by the end of the day, but there were bigger things in store for the weekend. I spent a couple of hours preparing for the "next big thing".

Miracle #3

The "next big thing" is actually the long-awaited upgrade of our enterprise mail server. We tried unsuccessfully to upgrade the server in 2 previous attempts. So here I am on Sat morning, tired and down with a bad bout of cold. My colleague, who returned to Singapore on Fri was down with coughing. 3 of us attempted the server upgrade. The entire processed lasted from 8.30am till 11.30pm with a half-hour break for lunch, and no dinner. When it ended, we know the upgrade has been successful with just a handful of minor issues. Almost 50 GB of mail data was ported over without any major problem. Considering that we are a team of 3 guys, of which 2 were sick and visibly tired from the hectic trip a few days earlier, this is a BIG miracle.

That's why I say, Geek Thanks. We are a bunch of geeks truly thankful to our God and heavenly Father, for his goodness and never-ending mercies.

May God bless you, readers.

Thomas
