The Christmas Adventure

Teacher Thomas: Hello teachers and children, welcome to Christmas Special 2010. For the next hour, there will be games, food, and lots of fun! Are you ready for that?

Today, we will bring you on an adventure. This modern day Christmas adventure will re-trace the steps of the wise men and shepherds as written in Matthew 2 and Luke 2 of the Bible. Make sure you have your Bible with you as you will need it throughout the adventure.

Before we start, teachers from each class will divide their students into 2 groups. Then one group from each class will be combined into one team, giving us 2 teams. So, let's form a team now! Teachers, please help :) Now, for each team, I want you to form a line from the youngest to the oldest. The oldest from each team will be the leader of that team. S/he will help you get organized in some of the games we will be playing.

Teacher Shirley will help us with the scoreboard. Each team that wins a game or completes an activity correctly first will get 20 points. The runner-up will get 10 points. If it's a draw, each team will get 5 points. Are you clear?

Item 1 (10 mins, including above introduction & team formation)

Let's start with a game.

I want you to look into a passage in the Bible and count the number of names of people, but don't tell me the answer. Instead, pick a nursery student in your team, tell him/her the answer, and then that child will come up to the whiteboard here, and circle the correct answer. Are you clear? Ok, the passage is Luke 2:1-5.

[Answer: 5 - Caesar, Quirinius, Joseph, Mary, David]

Item 2 (5 mins)

Our next item is an activity cum game, activity for the nursery kids, and game for the older kids.

Can teacher Adeline please help to read Luke 2:6-7?

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

Here's a worksheet for the nursery kids in each team. Please colour all things that a baby will need or use. For example, a baby will need baby clothes, right? So if you see a baby's shirt in this picture, please colour it. Look at this. It is a picture of a handphone. Does a baby need a handphone? No. So don't colour it.

Be sure to colour nicely within the lines, and use the right colours. When you have finished colouring, please give teacher Jess your worksheet ok? Teacher Jess will award points - 20 for the better one, and 10 for the other team.

For the older kids, you are to find words of things that a baby will need in this word search puzzle. There are 5 words altogether. The first team to find all 5 words is the winner.

Item 3 (5 mins)

The next game is a treasure hunt. Let's read Luke 2:8-12.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Pretend that you are the shepherds. What are you supposed to find? A baby in a manger. What does a baby in a manger look like? It looks something like this [shows picture].

The team that finds it wins. So, where is this baby in a manger? Somewhere in this Mighty KIDS area. Please do not go look anywhere else.

Item 4 (10 mins)

Now, let's read on and find out what happened next.

"And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly
host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on
earth peace, good will toward men." (Luke 2:13-14)

People usually get very excited when babies are born. They buy presents for the babies and their mothers. And when a baby turns one month old and one year old, there are usually celebrations.

Here we read that the angels appeared, praising GOD when Jesus was born. It was a very happy occasion because Jesus was not just any baby. He is the Saviour, the One who saves us from our sins.

Let's praise GOD too. We will now sing a song, "Hark the herald angels sing". I will invite the teachers to sing once for us, and then each team will take turns to sing. I will ask teacher Claudia to help judge which team sings better. The better team will get 20 points, the other team 10. If both sing equally well, each team gets 10 points.

Item 5 (10 mins)

Let's see what the Bible says next. Can teacher Adeline help us read Luke 2:15-20?

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Wow! Ok, now we have a mini-quiz. All are multiple choice questions, and the answers can be found in Matthew 2:1-9. You may read quietly by yourselves for 3 minutes. For the nursery kids who cannot read by yourselves, don't worry. We have some simple questions for you.

Before we carry on, here are the rules.

- Please raise your hand if you want to answer.
- Correct answer gets 20 points for the team.
- If you answer wrongly, the next team gets to try, and if they answer correctly, they get 10 points.
- No points for wrong answers.
- If anyone shouts out an answer, the chance to answer goes to the next team.
- nursery questions are for nursery kids only. Other kids or teachers cannot answer on their behalf.
