When the rain is blowing in your face, and the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace, to make you feel my love
When the evening shadows and the stars appear, and there's no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years, to make you feel my love
I can make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do, go to the end of the earth for you, to make you feel my love
("To Make You Feel My Love" by Adele ft. Paul de Leeuw)
Now while he was still speaking with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep, for she was a shepherdess. And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother.
Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice and wept. Genesis 29:9-11 NKJV.
Then Laban said to Jacob, "Because you are my relative, should you therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what should your wages be?" Now Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah's eyes were delicate, but Rachel was beautiful of form and appearance. Now Jacob loved Rachel; so he said, "I will serve you seven years for Rachel your younger daughter." Genesis 29:15-18 NKJV.
So Jacob served seven years for Rachel, and they seemed only a few days to him because of the love he had for her. Then Jacob said to Laban, "Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in to her." And Laban gathered together all the men of the place and made a feast. Now it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter and brought her to Jacob; and he went in to her. Genesis 29:20-23 NJKV.
So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, "What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?" And Laban said, "it must not be done so in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn. "Fulfill her week, and we will give you this one also for the service which you will serve with me still another seven years." Then Jacob did so and fulfilled her week. So he gave him his daughter Rachel as wife also. Genesis 29:25-28 NKJV.
Here we see Jacob's tenderness, affection and passion for Rachel, he had set his heart upon her right from the start. He desired her so much that he gave time and labour for her. Jacob's honest performance of his part of the bargain. The base cheat which Laban put upon Jacob. He wronged both Jacob and Rachel. The frivolous excuse Laban made. He drew Jacob into the sin, and snare, and disquiet, of multiplying wives. Jacob did not design it. He could not refuse Rachel, for he had espoused her; still less could he refused Leah, for he had married her.
From being a conniver who stole his brother's birthright, Jacob turned into a man of wit and honour. He stuck it out for Rachel, the love of his life. Likewise, God's love for us saw Him came near in the person of Jesus. It was love that sent Jesus to the cross. God loved us even before we understood what it meant to be loved by Him. But He knew, He was sure of His love. It was a love worth giving, it is a love worth receiving.
Shalom,
