Sabbath. Grandma's place. A normally quiet home was invaded too quickly by children, grandchildren, and gregarious great grandchildren.
Well, you can say that we shook the house a little, just enough for some laughter, drama and a little get-together. We ate, chatted, laughed, watched the kids
and followed the drama serial on television at the same time. I suppose you can say that the home is the birthplace of multi-tasking.
October 1st is Children's Day. Guess what? I received a goody bag from my five year old nephew! I counted, twenty items altogether. I have balloons, candies, cookies, biscuits, miniature toy soldiers and a pocket-sized toy car. It has been ages since I last received a Children Day's goody bag! Not to mention, a pack of Tiger Classic from my uncle and new clothes from my sister. Has Christmas come early this year?! : )
As the night came to a close, I sat down in the kitchen with my grandfather as he was finishing off some noodles which he had heated up earlier. Ah Gong is seventy-five years old and has only recently stopped work. Ah Gong is lean, has fluffy white hair and a gleaming moustache. He is meticulous, neat and tidy.
His eyesight is not as good as it used to be. We talked briefly. Initially he was reluctant to talk about our different beliefs. Ah Gong prays to Chinese idols, while I am a Christian convert. But I persisted, slowly.
Don't get me wrong, I am proud of my Chinese heritage. But the fact is that by grace, I am reconciled with GOD through faith in Christ Jesus. While the former is cultural and historical, the latter is spiritual and real. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light", and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. Genesis 1:1-5 NKJV.
God spoke: "Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature. So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, and yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of Earth." God created human beings; he created them godlike, reflecting God's nature. He created them male and female. Genesis 1:26-27 The Message. Who I am does not dictate what or whom I believe in, but the reality of His love does.
"This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need to be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. John 3:16-17 The Message. And the love of GOD and the reality of Him compels me to talk to my grandfather about Him. For all the gods of the peoples are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. 1 Chronicles 16:26 NKJV.
GOD determines the days of our lives. No one lives a minute more, or a minute less. And between heaven and hell, some of us are just trying to live.
Shalom,
Sv "+
